The Fakeout Chinese Takeout
By Angie from@diagnosis_cirrhosis on TikTok
Chinese takeout has always understood comfort: hot, savory, effortless, and usually accompanied by far too much dipping sauce.
For me, that meant dumplings—until I started paying attention to how quickly the sodium could add up through the wrapper, seasoned filling, soy sauce, and bottled sauces.
These cabbage dumpling cups are the workaround.
Soft cabbage leaves replace the wrapper, while ultra-lean turkey, mushrooms, carrots, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil keep the filling deeply savory. A lemony Greek yogurt topping adds creaminess without another salty sauce.
It answers the same craving with lean protein, vegetables, fiber, and plenty of flavor—without making dinner feel like a punishment.
Ingredients

The Savory Filling
1 lb Ground Turkey or Chicken Breast: 99% lean to keep saturated fats exceptionally low.
6 Large Cabbage Leaves: work perfectly as your zero-sodium wrapper swap.
½ cup Shredded Carrots
½ cup Diced Shiitake Mushrooms
2 Cloves Garlic: Minced, or equivalent jar-lic.
2 tsp Fresh Ginger: Grated.
1 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil: For that authentic takeout aroma. [1]
The Flavor & Deglazer
1 tbsp Rice Vinegar: Or plain water to scrape up the pan flavor.
1 tsp Salt-Free Chinese Five Spice (Optional)
Black Pepper / No-Salt Seasoning: To taste.
The Creamy Yogurt Topping
½ cup Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt: Choose the lowest-sodium option available.
1 tbsp LemonJuice & ½ tsp Lemon Zest
🌱 Fresh Garnish: Finely chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and optional cilantro or mint.
Bam It Up:
Splash of coconut aminos: a splash will give a nice “soy sauce” alternatitice
Bam It Up: The No-Salt Umami Deglaze
If you really want to take the savory depth of these dumpling cups to the absolute next level, swap out the rice vinegar or water for a splash of coconut aminos.
Standard soy sauce carries a massive sodium penalty that can instantly ruin your fluid-balance goals. Coconut aminos, however, are naturally low in sodium, gluten-free, and pack a deeply savory, slightly sweet flavor profile.
By splashing a tablespoon of coconut aminos into your pan during step 4, you get that authentic, rich "soy sauce" depth that ties the turkey and mushrooms together seamlessly, completely bypassing the salt shaker.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1:
The Wilted Leaf Wrapper Base
Boil cabbage leaves 2–3 min until soft.
Step 2:
Blooming the Aromatics
Heat sesame oil → sauté garlic, ginger, lemon zest (30–60 sec).
Step 3:
Layering the Flavors
Add turkey → cook + break apart.
Stir in your shredded carrots, diced shiitake mushrooms, and the salt-free Chinese Five Spice.
Sauté the mixture together for 3 to 4 minutes until themushrooms are tender and have released their natural flavors.
Step 4:
The Veggie Fold & Gravy Simmer
Deglaze with rice vinegar.
Use your spatula to scrape up all the highly concentrated, delicious browned flavor bits stuck to the bottom of the skillet.
Remove from heat.
Step 5:
Assembly & The Perfect Golden Bake
Mix yogurt + lemon juice.
Fill leaves (2–3 tbsp each, keep OPEN like cups).
Top with yogurt, green onions, sesame seeds + herbs.

Why the Ingredients Matter: The "Liver-Specific" Science
Whether you are navigating chronic conditions like MASLD/NAFLD, metabolic stress (MASH/NASH), autoimmune challenges, or viral infections like Hepatitis B or C, targeted nutrition protects your long-term cellular structure. Here is the medical logic behind this plate:
Reversing Liver Sarcopenia: Advanced liver disease severely impacts your body's standard protein synthesis pathways, causing muscle wasting. Combining ultra-lean ground turkey breast with a nonfat Greek yogurt sauce supplies an exceptional 19g of highly digestible protein per single cup to help preserve skeletal muscle mass and aid in the fight against muscle wasting.
Protecting Fluid Homeostasis: Pre-packaged Asian takeout is notoriously saturated with salt, which instantly exacerbates abdominal fluid buildup (ascites) and peripheral edema. Keeping this home-cooked baseline free of added salts allows patients to stay safely underneath the critical dietary ceilings established by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
Cruciferous Critical Support: Cabbage is a powerful cruciferous vegetable rich in glucosinolates and antioxidants. These specific compounds stimulate critical phase-II detoxification enzymes in your body, actively reducing hepatic oxidative stress and shielding damaged liver tissues from further metabolic inflammation.
Batch, Freeze, Storage & Reheating
Batch & Freeze Like a Pro: Storage & Reheating
Because this casserole is a labor of love, it is designed to be prepped ahead and frozen. Here is exactly how to store and reheat it so the cauliflower topping stays perfectly fluffy without weeping or getting watery:
How to Store and Freeze
The Cooling Step: Let the Shepherd’s Pie cool completely to room temperature before freezing. Putting a warm pie in the freezer creates condensation under the lid, which turns the cauliflower mash soggy when thawed.
Single-Serve Freezing: Slice the cooled pie into 6 even portions. Place individual squares into airtight, freezer-safe meal prep containers.
Whole-Pie Freezing: If baking in a disposable aluminum pan to freeze whole, wrap the pan tightly in plastic wrap, then cover it securely with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 3 months.
How to Reheat (No Soggy Mush!)
From Frozen (Individual Portion): Remove the lid and cover loosely with a damp paper towel to trap clean steam. Microwave at 50% power for 2 minutes to thaw the center, then blast on high power for 1 to 1.5 minutes until piping hot.
From Thawed/Fridge (Individual Portion): Microwave on high for 1.5 to 2 minutes. Let it sit for 1 minute before eating so the heat distributes evenly through the dense filling.
Oven Method (Best for Whole Pie): Thaw the whole pie in the fridge overnight. Remove the plastic wrap, tent it loosely with foil, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes to crisp up the Swiss cheese crust.
The Flavor Magic: Salt-Free Chinese Five Spice
If you think cooking a liver-safe dinner means eating bland, boring meals, this ingredient is a total game-changer. Standard takeout sauces rely heavily on soy sauce and MSG traps, but Salt-Free Chinese Five Spice is pure wizardry for a low-sodium kitchen.
This powerhouse blend combines star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, and fennel seeds. Together, these spices target your taste buds with a sweet, savory, and warm complexity that instantly mimics high-end restaurant cooking.
Just a single teaspoon tricks your brain into experiencing a deep, fully rounded flavor profile. It punches right through the ultra-lean ground turkey without pushing your sodium count up by a single milligram, giving you total comfort without the salt-heavy fluid tax.
